With the worldwide success of Sword Art Online and more recent titles in the same vein, the isekai genre will be sidelined for a while.

And that’s not necessarily a bad thing:

Writers in this crowded genre are under increasing pressure to create great characters and engaging, refreshing stories to stand out each season.

Of course, not all of Isaiah’s broadcasts are worthy of your attention.

But more than one have introduced anime fans to notable main characters, and here’s our ranking of the best.

20 Rudeus Greirat

Anime: Mushokyu Tensei: the reincarnation of the unemployed

Some of you may think this is cheating, since the first season of Mushokyu Tensei is not even finished yet.

But again, Studio Bind clearly goes all out for this adaptation with great shots and a visual story.

Rudeus began in his new world as a child gifted with magic. But the portrayal of his character is already interesting, thanks in part to animators and character designers.

The story (especially the light novel) is considered a fundamental Isekai title, much like Sword Art Online.

This has helped to set the tone and style of modern “generic” isekai shows – and many are curious to see how Rudeus develops in the long run, both literally and figuratively.

19. Adele von Aschem

Adele von Ascham in Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!

Anime: Didn’t I tell you to make my skills average in the next life!

Can a light animation novel by Isekai be authentic if the title is not so broad?

Sure, but it’s always nice when they’re like that.

all Misato Kurihara wanted was to live a normal and happy life (i.e. with great friends for life). But she left the world without realizing this dream – then she was transferred to a magical world and was born as Adele of Ashem.

This time she finally wants to live a normal life. But there is a small problem:

Adele is upset.

Although Adele is a thousand times stronger than a normal person, she is on her way to a normal life. And it’s fun and it’s cute.

18. Yuna

Yuna from The Bears Bear a Bare Kuma anime

Anime: Naked Kuma Bears

Sometimes I feel like the show was made to justify the stupid name.

Kuma Kuma Bear is one of those anime.

But I have to admit:

This series presents one of the most adorable and unique ISekai MCs in the form of the bear Yuna, who wears a costume.

No, the series neither revolutionizes nor undermines the genre. That’s not the point.

And yes, she has nice armor. But The Bears a Bare Kuma is also the girl who loves the MMORPG experience and finally gets the chance to live it.

17. Seiya Ryuuguin

Seiya Ryuuguuin in Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious

Anime: The hero is overwhelmed, but overprotective.

I love the premise of this comedy series.

Usually Isekai begins with the protagonist discovering how weak he is, and perhaps taking a beating at the hands of an inferior monster.

But Seiya Ryuguin is a true RPG enthusiast:

Instead of trying to complete quests as quickly as possible, he spends too much time training and upgrading. He also collects all the potions and tools he will need in his life (in the game).

Yes, it is unfair to his opponents that he is too cautious, making him too strong against them.

But if you don’t save all your potions until the very last part of the game, can you call yourself an expert RPG player?

16. diablo

Diablo from How Not to Summon a Demon Lord anime

Anime: How not to invoke the Lord of Demons

If you’re looking for an isekai protagonist who builds his own harem and has (of course) ecchi moments, look no further.

How Not to Summon a Demon Lord introduces viewers to Takuma Sakamoto, a typical closet boy who spends his life playing video games.

Fortunately, he is sent to the world of fantasy and becomes the character he plays, Diablo.

Better yet, he is controlled by two beautiful girls, an elf and a panther (in fact, a Neko girl) – and they happen to be his slaves.

Despite his ominous name, Diablo promises to break his contract.

And so you get a silly and whimsical story that is sometimes all you need to enjoy the day.

15. sora

Sora from No Game, No Life anime

Anime: No game, no life

Sorry if you’re a No Game, No Life fan like me. I guess it’s hard to remember that a well-deserved second season is not for tomorrow.

At the same time, I want to hail Sora as a first-rate MC.

Sora is a great NO.

Yes, his life is devoted to video games, but he is not afraid of people or social activities – so much so that he is able to correctly predict the behavior of others simply by observation.

On the other hand, he is very attached to his half-sister Loli Shiro. It’s up to you to decide whether it’s good or bad.

14. kazuto kirigaya

Kazuto Kirigaya in Sword Art Online anime

Anime: Sword Art Online

Sword Art Online is undoubtedly the most popular isekai series in anime history – and it is far from the long-awaited progressive adaptation.

I’m sure Kazuto (or Kirito) has his share of enemies.

But his long journey was accompanied by some important epic moments, particularly in the arc of the scale of order and alization.

Besides, I can’t deny that the power and harem fantasies it offers are still enough to grab my attention. Even though they have already been overused in isekai anime at this point.

13. Ryuma Takebayashi

Ryouma Takebayashi in By the Grace of the Gods

Anime: By the Grace of God

Humorously, the one and only Kirito from Sword Art Online was defeated by a little boy who just needed to relax and be happy in his new world.

And that’s exactly what I like about Rum Takebayashi.

He has no desire to conquer the world, defeat a demon king or perform the usual actions of an Isukai protagonist. Instead, Ryouma loves his rustic lifestyle and takes care of his slime – and this series soothes my tense soul.

Of course, he joins the others because he has a human need for socialization. But above all, Ryouma pursues the relatively simple and happy life he fully deserves.

12. shinichi canoe

Shinichi Kanou Outbreak Company anime screenshot

Anime: Pop Up Company

Outbreak Company is an underrated series that deserves more attention and admiration. But this is far from the truth, as this series is still discussed from time to time on the Internet.

What’s so great about this 2013 parody series?

Well, Shinichi Kanu is a great guy.

His crush, who rejected him for being an otaku, led him to the path of hikikomori, but he then decided to take a job meant for otaku.

He becomes a state patron of Otaku culture in the Old Kingdom, and the show takes him out of the park with his credentials – and I take Shinichi and Half-Self girl Mycel.

11) Haruhiro

Haruhiro from Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions anime

Anime: Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions

To date, Grimgar is one of the most refreshing Izekai and fantasy series in anime history.

Only the first episode caught my attention with its nuanced look at killing monsters and the group dynamics of beginners.

Haruhiro shouldn’t be leading the group in the first place.

He was just a concerned member of the thieving class, doing his best to comfort his buddies. But then something happens in the show and he gets a starring role.

Haruhiro stumbles into his new position and often has to fight against himself. He wonders what he is worth when his friends are invited to other parties. Nevertheless, he is getting better, little by little, and I can’t help but support him.

10th Naofumi Iwatani

Naofumi Iwatani in The Rising of the Shield Hero

Anime: The Rise of the Shield Hero

The hero of Shield Rising is Raftalia, a half-human with tanuki ears (Japanese raccoon).

She immediately became a leading candidate for the title of Best Girl of 2019.

And then there is Naofumi Iwatani, the male protagonist whose brilliant vision of life is tainted early on by a selfish and manipulative princess.

He shows contempt for women and finds it difficult to believe anyone who believes in the hero of the shield.

Fortunately, Naofumi doesn’t stay that way, plus he spends time with Raptalia and Philo. He’s not perfect, but he doesn’t let himself get off track, he doesn’t and neither do the others.

9th Hikaru Shidou

Hikaru Shidou from Magic Knight Rayearth anime

Anime: Magic Knight Ryart

Magic Knight Rayearth is the oldest series on my list – and I’m sure some of you weren’t even born when it aired on television.

Established in 1994, it was a different kind of isekai long before the SAO and other trophies were introduced.

Hikaru Shidou (and also Umi Ryuzaki and Fuu Houji) deserves recognition.

She is one of the first notable female MCs in the fantasy and isekai genre. Hikaru is less than six feet tall, but you won’t want to be the target of her fiery arrows and crimson lightning.

Moreover, Hikaru, an ice-cream lover, is brave.

Despite all the chaos and adversity (and sadness), she strives to maintain an image of hope and love. Besides, Hikaru is beautiful.

8. myne

Myne Ascendance of a Bookworm anime screenshot

Anime: The Rise of the Bookworm

Does the presence of libraries, new or old, fill the soul with comfort and warmth?

Every time it rains, I think of coffee and books – and Main is a man who loves the company of stories and pages.

I enjoy the Bookworm Ascension piece of life.

Urano Motosu, who in his original life dreamed of becoming a librarian, was reincarnated in a medieval fantasy world.

But instead of a twenty-something, she is a petite child with blue hair.

Can she still find a way to read books?

She can, but she must first become aware of her socioeconomic status, her health status, and the way her new world works with its class hierarchy.

7) Katharina Claes

Katarina Claes in My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

Anime: My Next Life as a Villain: All roads lead to destruction!

I’m glad this unusual isekai has a second season.

Like Mein, Katarina Claes was also a charming and interesting MC. Katarina was an otaku – exactly the kind of person who liked to play otome games.

Fortunately, she is now participating in a game called “Love Happiness.”

This is certainly the ideal situation for Katarina, isn’t it? No, not really.

Instead of the main character, Katarina is the main rival.

His character is designed to have a bad ending. But she doesn’t give up, even if it means fighting with fate (and game design).

6) Tania Degurechaff

Tanya Degurechaff from The Saga of Tanya the Evil anime

Anime: The saga of Tanya Evil

I wouldn’t say that Tanya is a likeable character. Many people like her, but not necessarily because of her small and sometimes deceptively cute appearance.

What sets Tanya apart from the other Isekai characters is that she is power hungry.

The first MC was a Japanese employee who wanted nothing more than to advance his career, even if it meant being rude to others.

Tanya is exactly as she originally was:

She does not hesitate to use others to gain higher ground and is considered a valuable soldier by her superiors.

But how exactly is he going to use his ruthless and cunning behavior in a world war? And how can he be free when an entity called “Being X” is present?

Tanya is crazy, but she’s also cute.

5. shiroe

Shiroe from Log Horizon anime

Anime: Log Horizon

One of the main reasons Kei Shirogane is high on the list is that I have always had a low opinion of working or participating in role-playing games that aim to help other players.

Instead of a normal warrior or fighter, it is someone who hits and hits.

But that doesn’t mean Shiro can’t do things on his own.

He has always been very introverted and an independent being. Nevertheless, his situation now presents a good challenge to his usual behavior.

And Log Horizon finally has a third season. While I realize that few people have seen the movie, I’m sure in time more people will recognize Shiro’s brilliant charisma.

4. the Rimuru storm

Rimuru Tempest in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Anime: The time I was reborn as slime….

Like “Log Horizon,” “TenSouth” had its long-awaited follow-up season in 2021.

Rimuru Tempest is not your typical protagonist transported into an imaginary world.

First, Rimuru (Satoru Mikami in the original) begins his new life as a slime – yes, a blue slime. But this is just the beginning.

If you’ve ever played RPGs, you know that slime can evolve in many ways, as if the sky were the limit.

Eventually Rimuru reaches a sufficient mass to resemble a child.

And even though Rimuru was a salaryman like Tanya in his first life, he is not a sadistic megalomaniac. He is a gentle, rather laid-back protagonist who helps where he can.

Rimuru is very exciting. And I can’t wait for him to become the honorable and wonderful leader he should be.

3. Kazuma Satou

Kazuma Satou in KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!

Anime: KonoSuba: a divine blessing in this wonderful world!

The general community of animators loves Season 1 and Season 2 – and the film was a success because it featured the beloved Blast Girl, Megumin.

Even without the S3, Kazuma Satou remains a very prominent protagonist of the Issekai.

He is the perfect male MC for a ridiculous show like KonoSuba. His vocal game is excellent, and I think his chemistry with Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness is hard to beat.

If you’re having a bad day or need to laugh, let Kazuma’s constant panic and agitation make you laugh.

2. momonga

Momonga from Overlord anime

Anime: The Overlord

The director had enormous potential. The light source of the novel has a cult character for a reason.

But the third season is upon us.

On the bright (or dark) side, Momonga was breathtaking in all seasons.

The last remaining Supreme Being of Nazaric was about to usurp world domination, although he had no intention of doing so (thank you, Demiurge).

I love the way he always makes Demiurge, Albedo and the rest of the Nazi NPCs believe he has an ingenious master plan.

More importantly, I can identify with Momonga as he values the objects left behind by his guilds.

I’ve played a lot of MMORPGs, and it’s always very satisfying to see fewer and fewer players enter the game every day – until you’re the last one in your guild. I hope Momonga (specifically, Ainz Ooal Gown) finds what he is looking for.

1) Subaru Natsuki

Subaru Natsuki in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World

Anime:Re:Zero – The beginning of life in another world

You get the impression that Subaru Natsuki is in a class of his own, that he is just another ISekai MC – and in a way he is.

Re:Zero is not your usual fantasy of isekai power.

Of course, Subaru was also a secret player in his old life, just like the rest of the male MCs. And in the new world, he was even surrounded by beautiful girls.

But Subaru’s desperation is on another level:

He doesn’t just die in the new world – he comes back to life and goes back in time, just like you load a save state when you die in a game.

It happens again and again, he dies in different but cruel ways, and sees others around him die.

To say that what he experiences in the anime is terrible is an understatement.

But Subaru is in a hurry. He must learn to face his major insecurities and become someone who can protect his new friends.
