#05 | Boggle

Boggle joins the list of board games like A Little Wordy because you have to do interesting things with a small group of random letters. There’s nothing like A Little Wordy, but for a word game, the way you have to put words together and fool your opponent comes pretty close. There is no deduction, but there is an interesting mechanism of building words with accessible constraints. This is a word game with a time limit where players have 3 minutes to find as many words as possible from the reversed letters in a grid of 16 cubes. When time is up, players compare their word lists and delete the words found by more than one player. For other words, points are awarded according to the number of letters in the word. For 1 to 8 players, the games last 10 minutes each.

#04 | Wordoku

Wordoku makes the list of board games like A Little Wordy because it is another interesting word building game that has a very innovative hook. Instead of making up a word and then trying to guess your opponent’s word, here you try to make up words, but also patterns. A different kind of game, but if you like interesting puns, this is the one. This game is a combination of crossword and Sudoku, where players try to put words together and score points using wooden letter tiles on a 4×4 grid, while cleverly using all the symbols on the tiles to double the meaning of the word. The game consists of three rounds, in which players are rewarded for achieving the highest score – and for improving their personal best scores between rounds. For 1 to 6 players, game duration 20 to 30 minutes.

#03 Spy Case

Spyfall joins the list of board games like A Little Wordy, as it has the same kind of back-and-forth gameplay with more and more questions and clues. It’s about who can get the most out of the information they get and get things done. This game is much more colorful and is a spy adventure, but the goal is still to solve the overall puzzle. Spyfall goes through several rounds. At the beginning of each round, all players receive cards with the same location on them – a casino, a traveling circus, a pirate ship, or even a space station – except that one player receives a Spy card instead of a location. Then the players start asking each other questions – Why are you dressed so funny? or When was the last time we got paid? or any other question you can think of, trying to guess who the spy is. For 3 to 8 players, the games take about 15 minutes.

#02 | Wavelength

Wavelength joins the list of board games like A Little Wordy, as it is a social guessing game where two parties compete to read each other’s minds. Sure, it’s more of a team fight than an individual fight, and your ability to create shapes doesn’t matter, but you still try to reach the final answers with some limitations. Good deduction and more game. Teams take turns spinning the wheel until they think the hidden dot is on the spectrum. One of the players on your team knows the location, draws a card with a pair of squares (rough – smooth, sad song – happy song, etc.) and gives a clue that conceptually indicates where the bullseye is between those two squares. After a clue is given, the team discusses where they think the target is and turns the dial to that point on the spectrum. For 2 to 12 players, the games take about 30 to 45 minutes.

#01 | Decrypt

Decrypto tops board games like A Little Wordy because it involves subtracting words side by side. The idea is very similar – you have words to reach, the only difference is that instead of the basic theme being created from random letters, it guides you through a series of clues. The exact piece of the puzzle you are trying to find is different, but it is the same puzzle. In Decrypto, players compete in two teams (white and black) and try to correctly interpret their opponent’s encrypted messages before their opponent does the same. On each team’s personal board, there are four cards taped to different screens (#1 – #4). The team can see these words, the opponents cannot. In each round, one team member is the decoder and draws a card with a number line (linked to 1 – 4). You have to make your team guess this sequence by giving them clues, but you also give clues to your opponent. For 3 – 8 players, game duration 15 – 45 minutes.

The A Little Wordy games are all about using your words to solve puzzles. The first game in the series is by far the most popular, so if you’ve played one you’ve played them all, and that’s not a bad thing. The game’s developers have taken several well-known styles of games and mixed them up into a game that offers a little something different than the majority of other word games..
