Apple Announces First US States to Allow Digital Driver’s Licenses and State IDs on iPhones

Apple is the first company to allow digital driver’s licenses and state IDs on iPhones. The new feature will be available in 12 states, including California, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah and Washington.

The driver license number is a feature that allows users to scan their driver’s license and use it as their digital ID. Apple has announced the first US States to allow this feature on iPhones.

Apple Wallet is getting a unique feature that will enable users keep digital copies of their driver’s licenses and state IDs on certain devices, eliminating the need for additional plastic in their wallets. Apple stated today that the first states have agreed to accept this new method of presenting identity.

Arizona and Georgia will be the first states to enable citizens to link their driver’s licenses or state IDs to Apple Wallet on their iPhone and/or Apple Watch devices. Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah will follow those states.

Residents of these states will be able to add a state ID or driver’s license to Apple Wallet by scanning their physical ID card and snapping a picture, which will then be securely transmitted to the issuing state for verification.

Select airport security checkpoints and lanes at participating airports are the first places where they may be flaunted. The innovation, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), will provide passengers with a whole new level of ease.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, stated, “The inclusion of driver’s licenses and state IDs to Apple Wallet is a significant step in our goal of replacing the physical wallet with a secure and easy-to-use mobile wallet.”

“We’re ecstatic that the TSA and so many states are already on board to help bring this to reality for passengers throughout the country using just their iPhone and Apple Watch, and we’re currently in talks with many more states as we strive to make this available nationally in the future.”

TSA Administrator David Pekoske stated, “This new and innovative mobile driver’s license and state ID program with Apple and states around the nation will allow a more smooth airport security screening experience for passengers.”

“Through this effort, TSA will be able to offer an extra degree of convenience to travelers by allowing more chances for touchless TSA airport security screening.”

Driver’s licenses and state IDs in Wallet will provide consumers a simple, quick, and secure method to show their license or state ID on their iPhone or Apple Watch. Customers will be able to upload their driver’s license or state ID to Wallet and just touch their iPhone or Apple Watch to show it to the TSA without having to take out their actual card or hand over their device once a partner state starts providing this feature to its citizens.
