Crysis Remastered Update Adds Experimental Ray Tracing Boost Mode

In a recent update to Crysis Remastered, the game was given access to a DXR Ray Tracing Boost mode. At this time, it’s only available to those with an RTX 2080, but it’s supposed to work on other DXR compatible graphics cards as well. According to an interview with a 3D software engineer that went through the Crysis Remastered source code, the update is part of a larger project to bring ray tracing support to Crytek’s game engine. The mode itself is called DXR Ray Tracing Boost Mode, and its purpose is to evaluate what the performance benefits could be of adding ray tracing into the Cryengine. The mode does not yet appear to have any real effect on performance.

Crysis is one of the most popular and influential PC games of all time, and now it’s finally getting a long-awaited graphical upgrade.  Crysis Remastered will add support for up to 16x anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, new improved textures, a better draw distance, and improved character models and shadows.  The real treat, however, is the game’s new “Ray Tracing Boost” mode, which supports DirectX Raytracing and is designed to improve the game’s lighting effects.  It’s worth noting that the Ray Tracing Boost mode is still experimental, however, and will only work on Nvidia’s GeForce 1070 and 1060 cards and Microsoft’s new Windows 10 October 2018 update.

Crytek has released the 2.1.2 update for Crysis Remastered. In addition to bug fixes and optimizations, it introduces a new experimental ray tracing acceleration mode that applies ray tracing to almost every surface in the game. It also includes beam randomness to properly support rough surfaces and adds 5% specular reflectivity to all surfaces by default. The new boost option can only be activated when Global Raytracing is enabled.

– The motion blur is activated again: Motion blur was temporarily disabled in version 2.1.1 due to issues where the effect of motion blur was much more intense than expected. The correction is applied and motion blur is available again.

– Improved model for SCAR.

– Fixed bug where players could enable anti-aliasing (AA) from the options menu when DLSS was enabled.

– Developer Comments: The idea is that AA does not work when NVIDIA’s DLSS is active. To improve visibility, the AA is now grayed out after DLSS is activated.

– Fixed a user interface issue that caused selected difficulty levels to display as Easy when a different difficulty level was selected.

– Fixed some black or random textures that could appear on some PCs when RayTracing is enabled.

– Several visible cracks that can occur in RayTracing geometries have been reduced and corrected.

– Fixed a rare bug that could occur when ray tracing was enabled.

– Fixed incorrect texture clipping that could be seen when RayTracing was enabled.

– Fixed an issue that could cause delays when loading RayTracing textures.

– Optimized use of GPU memory in RTX mode (approximately 300+ MB freed up per GPU).

– Fixed an issue with volume support for light clips when RayTracing is enabled, which now allows for more accurate RT shading.

– Fixed an issue where RayTracing screen space reflections were not visible on removed surfaces.

– RayTracing Screen Space Reflections performance optimization for 4K.

Is Crysis remastered free?

With the upcoming release of Crysis 2, fans of the original have been wondering if Crytek would remaster the original Crysis for modern consoles. Thankfully, the company recently stated that this will not be the case. Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has stated that the decision not to remake Crysis was due to the considerable effort and cost to do so, as the engine powering the original Crysis simply can’t be modified to run on current consoles. Since Crytek is already developing the CryEngine for the new generation of consoles, the cost of developing two different engines for two different platforms was deemed too expensive to consider. Crysis remastered is free to download and play on steam, with the game bundled in with the Crysis trilogy bundle. The remastered game is a result of a partnership between EA and Crytek, which allows the classic game to be played on modern PCs without the need for any additional software or hardware.
