The Toy Soldiers HD project has been in development for a while now. Toy Soldiers 4 was first announced at E3 2014 and featured Toy Soldiers 3 characters in the classic Toy Soldiers style. The only major difference between Toy Soldiers 3 and 4 is the new HD graphics, which will be going along with the Toy Soldiers franchise in a future update. Toy Soldiers 5 was announced at E3 2018 with an updated Toy Soldiers 4 engine and new characters inspired by Toy Soldiers 3. Toy Soldiers 5 is going to be the final chapter of the Toy Soldiers games.
The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) is a popular video game event, held every spring in Los Angeles, CA. The event primarily serves as a showcase for upcoming video games, but it is also a place where publishers and developers can show off their upcoming games and other content. The game also spawned several sequels, one of which was an XBLA exclusive released during one of the Summer of Arcade initiatives, and another was War Chest, also known as the He-Man toy game. Toy Soldiers’ original development team, Signal Studios, is developing a remaster of the classic 2010 game, which will be published by Accelerate Games. We had the opportunity to speak with Brett Gow, one of the team’s developers and a seasoned industry veteran, about what to expect from this improved version of the game. 
Flying the biplane was a highlight in the first Toy Soldiers, and I’m sure it will be the same in Toy Soldiers HD. For the uninitiated: Toy Soldiers is a game in which two armies of World War I toys fight to the death on playgrounds, much like in the Army Men series. The nice thing about this game is that you can play it as a strategy game, where you as the commander create units from above and give them orders, or choose a unit (whether it’s a soldier, plane, tank, etc.) and get your hands dirty in third-person action while the AI does the thinking for you. It featured a wide variety of units and play styles, all of which have been carried over into Toy Soldiers HD. Let’s move on to the most obvious improvement: As you can see from the presentation, Toy Soldiers HD looks much better than its eleven-year-old counterpart. The textures have been updated, the resolution has been increased and the frame rate has become more stable. This includes the Switch version of the game, which will be released at the same time as its PS4, PC and Xbox One counterparts. All DLC is included, several new missions have been added, as well as brand new multiplayer modes. For example, it’s possible to have one-on-one PvP battles using only biplanes. 
You can throw your soldiers into the enemy ranks with mortars and cannons. Finally, some gameplay changes have been made to improve the core of the game. In retrospect, one of the drawbacks of the original game was the fact that you could use any unit without consequence. They will automatically be available to you no matter how many times you die during the mission. This led to me spending most of my time with the biplane in the original Toy Soldiers game and not paying attention to the other parts. Toy Soldiers HD will have a limited number of unit replays, adding an extra level of difficulty and planning to the gameplay and forcing you to learn to play with different types of units. It sounds exhausting, but honestly, it’s a good addition. I really liked what I saw in the preview of Toy Soldiers HD. The base game was already good enough, so a simple remaster would have been enough. But the new maps, missions and changes in gameplay impressed me. What I liked most about the whole presentation, however, was the fact that the Switch port will be available at the same time as the other versions. The handheld is perfect for an arcade game like Toy Soldiers, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the final product. Toy Soldiers HD is scheduled for release in August 2021 on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch.

It was a first-person shooter game featuring toy- and model-based soldiers. It was developed by Totally Games and published by Merge Games.
