Funcom, the studio behind the hit game The Secret World, has expanded into the online world with the buying of The Outsiders, a Romanian online role-playing game. In the acquisition, Funcom now owns 85% of the company’s shares and has plans to expand the game’s user base beyond Romania, as well as launch English language versions of the game.
Funcom, a game developer with 24 titles under its belt (including the likes of the Age of Conan titles, The Secret World, Anarchy Online, and the upcoming addition to Heroes of Newerth), has purchased a majority stake in The Outsiders, a small indie game company. The company was founded by former Funcom employees, and has made games like The Crawl, The Prophet, and the original version of The Secret World. The acquisition is just the latest in a string of steps that Funcom has made in recent years to expand its roster of titles.
Funcom today announced that it has acquired a majority of shares in The Outsiders from the founders of the game development company Climax Studios. The Offspring is a free-to-play multiplayer game in which up to 32 players band together to survive on a post-apocalyptic island after a nuclear war. The Outsiders will continue development as an independent studio, while Funcom will act as a strategic partner and provide additional resources.
Norwegian video game publisher Funcom has acquired a majority stake in Swedish video game developer The Outsiders. Funcom also announced the construction of a new studio in Romania, to be located in Bucharest and become the company’s new quality assurance headquarters. This will be Funcom’s fourth office, the first three being in Oslo – Norway, Lisbon – Portugal and Raleigh – USA.
Funcom and The Outsiders have been working together for a while now, and their latest joint project is the upcoming rhythm football game Metal: Hellsinger. This partial acquisition will enable Funcom and The Outsiders to operate as a close-knit entity over the long term. According to Funcom CEO Rui Casais, the idea was for Metal: Hellsinger was given to him by the creative director and co-founder of The Outsiders, David Goldfarb.

This partnership will also enable Funcom to tap into a huge talent pool in Sweden. The official press release states that the direction of The Outsiders will remain the same, but that the studio plans to add new people to its team. This purchase will benefit their next Metal project: Hellsinger, as well as all their future releases.
