John Williams turned 90 this month, but the film composer still has enough of creative energy left in him to contribute to another blockbuster series that has helped define his illustrious career.
Williams will return to compose the theme for Disney and Lucasfilm’s upcoming Star Wars live-action series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, which will launch exclusively on Disney+ in May, according to Variety in an exclusive story today. Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen will reprise their roles as the eponymous Jedi master and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, respectively, in the program.
Obi-Wan Kenobi will begin broadcasting on Disney+ on May 25th, according to Disney. The theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), the tune for Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge theme park (2019), and the music for Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker are among Williams’ most recent Star Wars compositions (2019).
The ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Theme by John Williams Returns to the ‘Star Wars’ Universe (EXCLUSIVE) (Variety)
- It’s a major coup for both Lucasfilm and Disney, given the five-time Academy Award winner seldom composes for television. Although he has composed two themes for PBS programs (“Masterpiece Theatre” in 2000, “Great Performances” in 2009), and his news and Olympics themes, written decades ago, continue to run on NBC, his last theme for a weekly dramatic series was “Amazing Stories” in 1985.
- Williams’ compositions for “Star Wars” are renowned. He garnered Oscar nods for five of the sequels (“The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi” in 1980 and 1983, respectively, and “The Force Awakens,” “The Last Jedi,” and “The Rise of Skywalker” in 2015, 2017 and 2019).
- Williams composed the theme for the original Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Alec Guinness, which became known as the Force (“the spiritual-philosophical belief of the Jedi Knights and the Old Republic,” as the composer explained in 1977), and which is perhaps best remembered for its use in the Throne Room scene that concluded the first “Star Wars” film and which Williams has performed many times in concert.
