Windows 10 users are being limited to major updates, or “feature updates” every other year. The change is a result of Microsoft’s new Windows update policy that was announced in March 2018., citing compatibility issues with older hardware and stability concerns as the reasons behind this decision. What does this mean for gamers?

Microsoft has released a new update for Windows 10, but it is limited to once a year. The company will not be releasing feature updates more than once every 12 months.

Semi-annual feature updates for Windows 10 will no longer be available. Microsoft’s John Cable (Vice President, Program Management, Windows Servicing and Delivery) confirmed this in a blog post on today’s release of the Windows 10 November 2021 Update, stating that the older OS would only get yearly feature upgrades in the future. Windows 10 feature updates will no longer be published in the spring.

Cable explains:

We’ll switch to a new Windows 10 release schedule that aligns with Windows 11’s, including yearly feature update releases. Starting with the November 2021 Update, we’re changing the servicing option for releases to the General Availability Channel (Note: this replaces the old “Semi-Annual Channel” moniker for the service option). The next feature update for Windows 10 is expected in the second half of 2022.

We’ll keep supporting at least one version of Windows 10 until October 14, 2025. Beginning today, Home and Pro versions of the November 2021 Update will get 18 months of servicing and support, while Enterprise and Education editions will receive 30 months of servicing and support as a second half (H2) of the calendar year release.

The November 2021 Update for Windows 10 brings the following changes:

  • Support for the WPA3 H2E Wi-Fi security standards has been added.
  • Simple passwordless deployment approaches are supported by Windows Hello for Business, allowing for a deploy-to-run state in a matter of minutes.
  • GPU computing support for machine learning and other compute heavy processes in the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and Azure IoT Edge for Linux on Windows (EFLOW) deployments
