Introduction

Today we’re testing an AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics card based on a GPU made entirely by a retail manufacturer.  The MSI Radeon RX 6700 XT GAMING X 12G is a dedicated graphics card with a powerful heatsink and fan, reliable hardware and overclocking capabilities.  According to MSI, play hard, stay quiet, and that’s exactly what the GAMING X version offers.  The overall look has also been refreshed and MSI is using the TWIN FROZR 8, which we’ll talk about later. The MSRP in the US is very high with an official price of $789.99. MSI points out that this price is only valid for the United States, as customs imposes a 25% tax on imports. MSRP and, more importantly, street prices may change in the future.

Before we get to the graphics card, let’s take a look at other MSI Radeon RX 6700 XT models to see where the GAMING X stands.  Looking at MSI’s Radeon RX 6700 XT series, we find five different graphics cards.  MSI offers a reference model that simply uses the same cooler as the reference board, but with MSI branding.  Then we move on to the MECH series, which includes two fans and a custom cooler.  The MECH series also offers a factory overclocked version.  At the top of the list is MSI’s GAMING series.  The GAMING series is equipped with the latest TWIN FROZR 8 cooling system and offers an overclocked version with the X model.  This makes the MSI Radeon RX 6700 XT GAMING X the fastest and best Radeon RX 6700 XT based graphics card that MSI offers.

AMD Radeon RX 6700 XTSpecifications

Before we get into the features of the MSI Radeon RX 6700 XT, we’ll first give a brief overview of the Radeon RX 6700 XT.  AMD launched the Radeon RX 6700 XT on the 17th. March 2021 with an MSRP of $479 to complete the Radeon RX 6000 series.  This brings it closer (in terms of price) to the GeForce RTX 3070 FE, although AMD is targeting the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti as a competitor.  However, AMD says the Radeon RX 6700 XT is designed for 1440p gaming.

The Radeon RX 6700 XT is based on RDNA2 on 7nm.  It has 40 math blocks and beam accelerators.  It has 2560 stream processors, 64 ROPs and 160 texture mapping blocks.  The game’s GPU clock is 2424 MHz and the GPU boost clock is 2581 MHz.  It has 12 GB of GDDR6 running at 16 GHz on a 192-bit bus and offers 384 GB/s throughput.  The power of the card is 230 W.

MSI Radeon RX 6700 XT GAMING X

First of all, the specifications: The MSI Radeon RX 6700 XT GAMING X is overclocked from the factory.  The clock speed of the game GPU is set to 2514 MHz and the boost GPU to 2622 MHz.  For comparison, the reference Radeon RX 6700 XT has a GPU clock of 2424 MHz and a GPU boost clock of 2581 MHz.  This increases the gaming frequency by 90 MHz and the maximum GPU frequency by 41 MHz.  This should allow the graphics card to run at a higher constant frequency in the real world while gaming compared to the reference RX 6700 XT.  We’ll find out what it is and how it compares to the reference card in the test.

Otherwise, the memory specifications are unchanged: It has 12 GB of GDDR6 memory at 16 GHz.  The power consumption is always 230W and the recommended power supply is 650W.  The MSI Radeon RX 6700 XT GAMING X has 3 DisplayPort (v1.4) and 1 HDMI 2.1 port.  The graphics card requires two 8-pin power connectors.  It supports PCI Express Gen 4 and AMD Smart Access Memory.  The dimensions of the graphics card are 10.9 inches long, 5.1 inches wide and 2.2 inches high, and it weighs 2.5 pounds. It is therefore slightly longer than the reference card, which measures 10.5 inches. However, it is much wider than the reference card, which is 4 inches, and also much thicker, as the reference card is 1.5 inches thick. Overall, this is a bigger card than the others.

Let’s talk about the heat sink and fan of the TWIN FROZR 8.  This combination uses TORX FAN 4.0 technology.  There are two fans with pairs of blades connected by an outer ring construction.  This allows airflow to be directed to the improved TWIN FRORZ 8 cooling system.  Thanks to Zero Frozr technology, the fans completely stop running at low temperatures. As part of the design process, the heat pipes are precision milled to ensure contact with the GPU and distribute heat along the entire length of the heat sink.  The cooler itself features baffles and channels that improve airflow dynamics, with wave-shaped curved 2.0 fin edges.  It provides additional surface area and directs air where it is needed.  In addition, a large number of thermal conductive pads are used to ensure heat dissipation from the board components.

The design is completed by a solid aluminum backplate that improves the durability of the graphics card and provides passive cooling via thermal pads.  There is also a metal tab on the edge to protect the graphics card from bending.  For added protection, extra fuses are built into the circuit board to provide extra protection against electrical damage. The PCB material is designed with 2oz copper.  MSI’s high-end hardware components are also used for stable performance and overclocking capabilities.  Supports MSI RGB Mystic Light for full RGB control and synchronization.  MSI Dragon Center software lets you monitor, tune and optimize your graphics card, while MSI Afterburner takes care of overclocking.

The case design and RGB lighting have been slightly modified to maintain the overall look.  There are parallel slots on the front and the MSI and Drago logos are on the top edge.
