On this day in Nintendo history, there are a variety of games that could only exist due to the company’s innovation. These include Donkey Kong Hockey and Mickey’s Speedway USA.

The “game and watch games” are a series of handheld video game consoles created by Nintendo. The first game in the series, Game & Watch, was released on November 21st, 1980. It is a portable device that features a single-screen LCD display with a built-in clock and digital sound effects.

On this day in Nintendo history (November 13),…

  • In Japan, Donkey Kong Hockey for the Game & Watch Micro Vs. was launched in 1984. Score goals against each other while avoiding the referee and the Crazy Spots in this sports game created by Nintendo R&D1. Donkey Kong and Mario appear in this two-player hockey game. The ball bounces back and forth. It changes path when it collides with a wall, the referee, or the Crazy Spots. To safeguard their aim, Mario and Donkey Kong may travel across their play grounds. The game is won by the first player to achieve 10 points.

  • In North America, Mickey’s Speedway USA was published in 2000 for the Nintendo 64. Three nasty Weasels have stooped to a new low in this racing game produced by Rare, dognapping Pluto and taking him on a fur-raising joyride across America. Unfortunately for the Weasels, Mickey seeks assistance from his friends. Each and every one – Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, even the rascally Pete – jumps in their go-karts for a full-throttle race from sea to shining sea faster than you can say “pedal to the metal.”

  • Yoshi’s Island DS was published in North America for the Nintendo DS in 2006. Return to Yoshi’s Island in this platforming game by Artoon for an innovative journey in the style of the Super NES classic. Yoshi may join up with Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, Baby Donkey Kong, Baby Wario, and Baby Bowser in addition to Baby Mario and Luigi! Yoshi can morph into a helicopter, tank, or submarine, among other things. Use each sidekick’s unique talents to traverse five enormous words.

  • A Tiny Bit of… In Europe, Nintendo Touch Golf (known in North America as True Swing Golf Express) was published in 2009 for DSiWare. Using the Touch Screen, tee off with power, drive with accuracy, and putt with precision in this T&E Soft sports game. This realistic golf simulation is ideal for both beginners and professionals, and contains a unique Challenge mode with unique golf-related tasks!

  • Isabelle – Winter Outfit, K.K., Mabel, Tom Nook, Digby, and Cyrus were among the first wave of Animal Crossing amiibo Figures released in North America in 2015.

  • In North America, a second wave of Animal Crossing Promo amiibo Cards was published in 2015, including Goldie (amiibo Festival), Stitches (amiibo Festival), and Rosie (amiibo Festival) (amiibo Festival).
