Review – Grime –

Grime is a competitive game that pits two teams of four players against each other in a battle to the death. Players must work together to survive, scavenging for weapons and ammo while defending themselves from waves of enemies.

Some of the greatest Metroidvania games are made by indie developers. They combine difficult and, at times, violent gameplay with excellent level design and, on occasion, novel features. Although, throughout time, there has been a little oversaturation of the genre. GRIME is an excellent game that offers much more than enough to make it stand out.

Review-Grime

GRIME is a well designed game.

To be completely honest, I have no idea what GRIME is about. The game begins with a short cinematic that introduces you to this dark and bleak world. You can speak to NPCs and read descriptions to learn more about the narrative, but I never got into it. Instead, I mainly skipped through conversation or just ignored NPCs that didn’t provide any useful information.  

GRIME is a 2D Metroidvania game that draws heavily on the Souls series and other From Software titles. It’s a challenge. With some excellent platforming, GRIME strikes a nice mix between fighting and exploration. The universe of GRIME is vast, with a wide range of settings ranging from the darkest depths to massive and terrifying castles filled with traps. Every area has its own set of mysteries. It’s nothing new, as we’ve seen in games like Blasphemous, which is one of the genre’s finest. GRIME, on the other hand, accomplishes just enough to stand apart. 

Combat is similar to that of a 2D souls game. You have limited health, stamina, and opponents that may easily kill you if you get overconfident. It’s difficult, but not unfair. You won’t lose your Mass (essentially souls) if you die, which happens a lot, making it a much more forgiving experience overall. In reality, for the most part, the difficulty curve is very excellent, gradually introducing more and more tough opponents. 

I’ve got to give it to the designers… It seems to be one-of-a-kind for a Souls-like.

A emphasis on parrying has been placed on the game, similar to those of titles like Sekiro. To succeed, you must time a block perfectly to stun or harm an opponent. GRIME expands on this fundamental idea by including it into the game’s advancement system, health regeneration, and other features. If your enemy’s health is low in GRIME, they are vulnerable to being absorbed on their next assault. Certain strikes cannot be parried, and they are clearly telegraphed by the opponent glowing red, indicating that you must instead avoid the attack.

You’ll acquire a characteristic if you absorb enough of a particular opponent kind, which you may improve at your checkpoints. You will acquire breath if the absorption is a last blow, which is the game’s equivalent of a healing resource. It’s a great concept that requires you to take damage in order to recover health while also actively pushing you to chase down opponents in order to get those delicious upgrades. 

Then there’s platforming, but there’s a lot of it, and it’s not for everyone. However, it’s done really nicely here. It may be a bit boring at first, with basic platforming that seldom takes much effort, but it gradually improves as you acquire skills that are more geared toward mobility. Dash leaping allows you to pass through specific things and get access to them. Meanwhile, add another layer by doing a double leap and pulling. These abilities are used in some intriguing platforming and light puzzles. Just remember to highlight places on the map that you can’t reach and return to them once you have the necessary power. 

Of course, there are boss battles, and a lot of them. Each has its own distinct design and mechanisms that make excellent use of GRIME’s fundamental gameplay. To fight them, parrying, basic strikes, and even platforming are required. The complexity varies, with some bosses being very tough and others being beaten on the first or second attempt. The simpler bosses just don’t realize the full potential of their cooler designs, which include slow and predictable motions as well as plenty of opportunity for error. Then there’s the second half’s more tough bosses, who are both challenging and fair after you learn out their attacks. It took me up to a dozen deaths to defeat some of these monsters, which made it all the more gratifying when I eventually did. Even the mini-bosses (typically indicated with a red diamond) may be difficult to defeat, but they provide excellent rewards.

GRIME may look anything from boring and uninspired to beautiful and one-of-a-kind. Each of its many sites has a distinct visual style and color scheme that makes it easy to know where you are at all times. Early on, the dark and rocky regions are oddly constructed and frightening, featuring rock creatures. These regions quickly become outdated due to their drab appearance. Things become much more interesting after GRIME introduces additional color and distinctively styled NPCs. They show off some amazing visual sights and lights that stretch out into 3D space, giving the environment more dimension. 

I’m not sure what I expected from GRIME, but its unique absorbing mechanism, fast-paced fighting, and interesting platforming all come together in a satisfying way. GRIME accomplishes more than enough to be worthy of your attention, even though the genre of Souls-like Metroidvanias is getting oversaturated.  

 

The visual style of GRIME isn’t for everyone, but there are a few wonderfully designed sections that I wish we saw more of.

A good Metroidvania game with several interesting features that make progressing enjoyable.

The sound design doesn’t do much to stick out, but it’s still adequate. 

GRIME is a fantastic Metroidvania game.
