Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – A Breath of Fresh Air From Asia

In the early 1990s, a little-known character from the Chinese martial arts called Master Fu went from being a second-rate street fighter to a hero of the international stage by becoming the bodyguard of a young heir to a rich and powerful dynasty.

Last week, we saw WWE 2K15 on the PS4, and it immediately became one of the best wrestling games we’ve played in a long time. 2K has taken a lot of flak for some poor decisions in the past, so it’s nice to see them step up their game and make a solid wrestling game.

Shang-Chi is a character that has appeared in many comics, but the character is more popular in comics outside of the United States. If you’re not familiar with him, Shang-Chi is the son of the famous martial artist Fu-Ma who is trained by his father to be a master of martial arts. Fu-Ma is killed by the evil criminal lord the Mandarin, who sends assassins after Shang-Chi, his father’s allies, and his sister. Shang-Chi defeats the assassins, but is knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds that the assassins had turned the island they were on into a city, which they named “New China”. The islands they overthrew were known as the “Middle. MOVIE REVIEW – Shang-Chi is a fantastic ambassador for Phase 4 of the MCU. The pure-hearted martial artist succeeds to wonderfully establish himself in the hearts of the audience despite being a little-known hero before the premiere of the feature picture. Shang-Chi is by far one of the greatest Marvel films to date, with hard-hitting battles, fantastic fantasy, amazing action scenes, and a screenplay that keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end.

Is it possible to include Chinese fantasy into the Marvel superhero universe? That seems to be the case. And we owe this little achievement to the young filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton (The Glass Castle, 2017), who was able to blend these two realms, which seemed to be worlds apart at first glance.

The new face of Marvel, Shang-Chi, is a paper character created in 1973 in comic books under the pen of Steve Englehart and the brush of Jim Starlin, much like Black Panther, which drew directly from the 1970s “blaxploitation” genre. This comic book was first inspired by Sax Rohmer’s famous literary classic Doctor Fu-Manchu. Fu Manchu’s primary figure is a villain who represents the yellow threat to the British. Shang-Chi is portrayed as Fu Manchu’s long-lost son.

This self-styled pacifist superhero was given a Homeric appellation that was as plain as can be at the time: “Master of Kung-Fu,” and this was about a year before Netflix picked up another martial arts master, Iron Fist, for a Bruce Lee-style action series.

More Asia-centric

Chang-persona Chi’s has always been more based in Asia and old Chinese tales in the comics. As a result, authors Dave Callaham and Destin Daniel Cretton (who both contributed to the screenplay) naturally gravitated toward Chinese fantasy flicks like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Chinese Ghost Stories, and The Monkey King. Without a doubt, the Chinese bestiary (dragons, monsters, and other Ryuu), subtle magic, and the scent of Asian enchantment saturate their film…

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings tells the story of Shaun (Simu Liu), a young man who has run away from his father to seek safety in the United States, specifically in San Francisco, where he works as a hotel valet with his closest friend Katy (played by the Chinese-American comedian and actress Awkwafina).

You can’t always get away from an overbearing parent like Wenwu. Tony Leung, Wong Kar Wai’s favorite actor, acts with precision, power, and sadness (most notably in In the Mood for Love). This agonizing, inconsolable figure never stops drowning in the rage of unhealed sorrow.

This cunning villain, who is the head of the criminal organization The Ten Rings, finally finds down his son and sends a commando to rescue him. Shang-Chi will have to confront his fate and assume his legacy while teaming up with his sister and friend Katy, who brings the comic to life with her comedic jabs and well-tuned lines aspect, as well as the second degree, which is precious to Marvel.

Various sources

While still a Disney blockbuster, this American blockbuster, set in the Middle Kingdom (which annoys the Chinese government to no end), will draw its inspiration from a different source than past Marvel films. That’s what makes it enjoyable. It’s even what separates the two. Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings mythology are being blown by a new wind. The action scenes, such as Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, or Chinese kung-fu bouts, are, of course, high-intensity.

In the minds of Western children, the Rings mythos is linked to another literary and cinematic epic, J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, which was adapted for the big screen by Peter Jackson.

Nonetheless, filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton renews the genre with an unparalleled creative melting pot by immersing the origin story of this new Marvel hero in the ink of classic Chinese mythology. The presentation is often awe-inspiring.

Even the battles and choreography of the closing scenes have a certain beauty to them… It’s like if Crouching Tiger and the Hidden Dragon crossed paths with the Avengers…

The oriental magic and kung fu serve as a wonderful basis for the film’s atmosphere and imagery, with a stellar cast (particularly Tony Leung’s major villain) as an added bonus. Only the standard Marvel clichés distract from the overall image, and more kung-fu instead of the CGI orgy would have been welcome.

Lots of people know this movie as the first movie to feature Jackie Chan, who is considered one of the greatest action stars of all time. But not many people know how this movie was originally meant to be. The movie was originally supposed to be called “Never Say Die,” and was inspired by the comic books by J. Michael Straczynski. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was originally conceived as a graphic novel called “Never Say Die,” and was meant to be a direct sequel to the first movie, where the main character, Shang-Chi, would return and pick up where he left off..
