Take-Two reported strong earnings for the fiscal third quarter of 2017, with revenue up 18%. The result was driven by better-than-expected sales of NBA 2K17 and Grand Theft Auto 5. (The latter remains a juggernaut, with unit sales surpassing 72 million as of September 30.) So what does the future hold for Take-Two? Highly anticipated new releases like Red Dead Redemption 2 and the new version of WWE 2K18 should keep the publisher busy, but it also has plans for a number of new offerings, including a new NBA game that will launch alongside the upcoming basketball season.

Strauss Zelnick, president and CEO of Take-Two, said the results ended an excellent year for the company. Four big and exciting releases are planned for this fiscal year, two of which are from new franchises. This last statement raises the question: What are these new franchise games? Two of them will be from proven franchises, the other two are not yet known. One of these four games is being developed by Gearbox, but we don’t know much more about it.
One of Rockstar Games’ major achievements in the past quarter was the free content updates for GTA Online, including new story missions in the casino, stunt racing and exotic cars. Red Dead Online has also received a free content update with missions, Outlaw Passage #5, and a variety of new cosmetics and rewards. Rockstar will continue to support both games with new and exciting content to keep players coming back.
As for 2K, well, there’s a lot to talk about. First: NBA 2K21 Arcade Edition on Apple Arcade is a new basketball experience on Apple devices. The company has also acquired the video game division of Austin-based HookBang, LLC, which will be renamed Visual Concepts Austin and will expand into the NBA 2K franchise. PGA Tour 2K21 received a Season 2 Clubhouse Pass and a new Divot Derby mode. 2K has also entered into an exclusive partnership with Tiger Woods that includes the rights to his name and likeness in the 2K PGA Tour franchise and all other golf games developed by 2K during the term of the agreement. We were also treated to the first teaser for WWE 2K22, which will be released later this year, featuring Ray Mysterio Jr. and other wrestling legends. With that in mind, WWE 2K Battlegrounds has released its latest roster update, featuring M.. McMahon, Paige, Ricky Steamboat, British Bulldog, Mr. Perfection, Doink the Clown, Jim Anvil Neidhart and Father included. Other new elements also appeared in the seventh season of WWE SuperCard. The Borderlands 3: A Director’s Cut add-on has been released, available as a download for owners of Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition or Season Pass 2, but also available separately. Tales from the Borderlands has also been re-released on consoles and PC. Finally, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI includes the Vietnam & Kublai Khan Pack and the Portugal Pack, which completes an entire season of New Frontier Pass content and brings a variety of new leaders, civilizations, and game modes to Civilization VI. There was no mention of a release date for the highly anticipated GTA 6, although we certainly thought about it. In total, the GTA series has crossed the 345 million sold mark, of which GTA V represents just over 40%. Take-Two also said it plans to release more than 40 new games over the next three years and 21 games next year alone.
